Tariq describes the Malinov brothers as "twisted, highly intelligent siblings who very early on decided to give up their souls, turn vampire and seek to destroy the prince and all Carpathian hunters." Currently, Vadim leads the group, and he is using state of the art technology to bring more power to his army. Ever since then, they have caused all kinds of terrible trouble. To review: The Malinov brothers were once Carpathians, but they rebelled against the Carpathian Prince and chose to become soulless vampires many centuries ago. That means that Tariq arrives on the scene just in time to rescue the women from an attack by a group of vampires led by Fridrick Astor, a top lieutenant in Vadim Malinov's vampire army. Since this is early in the book (chapter 3), the reader can relax because it's too early for the heroine to get kidnapped. Coincidentally, the Morgan Center's tests showed that both Charlotte and Genevieve are powerful psychics.Īs they leave the club to begin their amateur detective adventure (which would have resulted in their immediate capture by the bad vamps), Tariq scents Charlotte (orange blossoms and vanilla) and follows them. The two women are certain that the crimes are somehow connected to their visit to the Morrison Psychic Center in Paris because the murders and the stalking began immediately after that visit. In this case, Charlotte and her friend, Genevieve, have set themselves up as bait at the Palace, Tariq's dance club, so that they can track down the scary men who have been stalking them -murderers who have taken the lives of several of their nearest relatives and dearest friends.

Feehan does use an info dump technique to add pertinent background details to the novel, but reading the novella in its entirety would be better.
First, a warning: You need to read the novella "Dark Crime" before you read this novel because all of the action in the novel relates directly back to the events in the novella.
